NON MON (2009) ••• click here to buy from amazon japan ••• click here to buy from sony japan Japan: Sony/DefSTAR Records DFCP-17 An album compiling some of Morgan's most interesting music written for Japanese TV advertisements. Ranging from string quintets to hardcore jazz, minimal and ethnic music to Disneyesque surrealism, the widely varied tracks have been extended from their original lengths of 30 seconds or so to around three minutes each, and were written for the following major clients: Gekkeikan Sake, Hitachi, Kao Cosmetics, Keisei Skyliner, Nissan, NTT Group, Sapporo Beer, Shiseido, Sony. Many of Japan's finest musicians were involved, and the Gekkeikan track features a beautiful vocal by Norwegian jazz diva Karin Krog. The cover and booklet feature a selection of Morgan's light paintings. An alternative mix of the first track is the featured opening track on "SHIFT III - NISSAN CM TRACKS" (DefSTAR DFCP-16). Morgan also created the featured opening track on the "SHIFT II" album (Sony MHCP-971, 2006).. Morgan explains the title thus: Non Mon is a Japanese word adapted from the English words “non modulation.” It indicates the half-second of silence at the start of each Japanese TV ad (due to local technical requirements). For me, Non Mon is a symbol of the way I compose music. When my mind is totally silent, new music often appears, fully-formed, especially if I have my hands on a keyboard. In this way I am able to compose music very quickly. This is my interpretation of the term Non Mon; it seemed ideal as an album title.
